Meet Dr. Nickie

A survivor of unthinkable loss at the age of four, she grew up inside a foster care network that failed repeatedly to protect its children. Her story is one of the most documented examples of systemic negligence, but she refuses to let tragedy be the headline of her life. Instead, she transformed it into a lifelong mission.

Guided by a unique blend of understanding, patience, deep connection and unwavering love, Dr. Nickie has become one of the most influential forces behind child welfare reform. With a Masters in Social Work specializing in child welfare and trauma-informed care, a PhD in Nursing and a Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering, she has used her expertise to strengthen protections for foster children nationwide. Her work has been recognized through multiple honors, including the Champions for Children Award, the FosterMorey Award and the Champion for Children & Families Award.

After aging out of the foster system at sixteen, she immediately stepped into advocacy, determined to build the safety she never received. Her nonprofit, My Healthy Baby, provides respite care, educational support and a sanctuary for foster children to breathe, grow and prepare for adulthood. From life-skills workshops to mentorship with lawyers, financial advisors, tradespeople and veterans, she ensures every child leaves her programs equipped not just to survive, but to rise. As the kids say, “She makes sure we know how to adult.”

Little Lights is a continuation of that legacy. Created to offer teen mothers a safe, compassionate, and dignified path to adoption, it gives families a more personal, loving experience as they grow. Rooted in Dr. Nickie’s belief that “Whether you are adding a little light or needing support for a little light, you are not alone,” the organization stands as a place of refuge, empowerment and steady guidance.

Her work is a constant fight against injustice, but she carries it with grace. Every program she builds is designed to give children a chance to live fully, not merely endure. Through Little Lights, Dr. Nickie continues her lifelong promise: to protect every child’s right to safety, belonging and hope.
